The winner will face incumbent superin tendent, Democrat Bob Ether idge, in November. Money can't buy love: But it can buy a few new guns for the ■ Columbus Police Department. Thanks to alert police work on the part of Columbus Police Officer Chris Abril in April 1991, the Drug Enforcement Administration presented the Columbus Police with a check for $21,300 Thursday. The money represents 85% of the cash seized when Abril arrested a drug dealer at the Days Inn Motel in Columbus. Columbus Police Chief Billy Steppe said, in accordance with federal laws regarding seized money, he plans to set the cash aside for such things new bullet proof vests, new weap ons, overtime pay for drug (Continued On Back Page) TRYON, N.C. 28782 Girl Scout Lake Property Not Sold, But Off Limits The Girl Scout Lake property at Lake Lanier will not be sold at this time, the directors of the Pisgah Girl Scout Council decided Wednesday. But no one can use the camp. After a two-hour, forty-five- niinute executive session, the Pisgah Council directors voted to throw out the long range plan which called for selling the property. However, the directors ruled that no one can use Camp Lit tlefield at Lake Lanier until further safety studies can be made for liability reasons, reported Campbell. The board will try to make a decision in July. Until that time, there will be no use of the property," said Linda Rogers, executive director of the Pisgah Council. Because the water in front of the dock at Camp Littlefield, which is in the third basin of Lake Lanier, is heavy with boaters, the council has been concerned about canoeing safety. A group of ten Polk County Girl Scout leaders and adminis trators presented a proposal to improve the safety, a way to keep records of safety, an easier way of registering for use of the Lake Lanier camp (which will take less than the month they say it now takes), and ways to improve communication (Continued On Back Page) FRIDAY, MAY 29,1992 The Class of 1992 Graduates Stephanie Michelle Morgan Tryon High School Honors Graduates The last graduating class of Tryon High School will hon or its top five graduates in its commencement ceremonies this evening. These graduates will address the seniors, underclassmen, parents and alumni in speeches recalling the history and tradi tion of the schools in Tryon. Tryon High graduation will be held at 6:45 p.m. at Harmon Field Eargle Stadium. In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved to the Tryon Elementary auditorium. Stephanie Michelle Morgan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Morgan of Landrum, was honored by her class as its valedictorian. Polk Central graduation cere monies will be held tonight at 8:30 p.m. at the Polk Central football field, rain or shine. Fagan, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry James Fagan, has been an outstanding athlete and scholar. He plans to attend Wofford to study computer science. Culbreth, the son or Mr. and Mrs. James Culbreth, was first tuba in the all-state band, and has participated in cross country and track.
